HDBaseT: HDMI's replacement?
HDMI might be getting competition in the next few years, if the HDBaseT Alliance has anything to say about it. A coalition of electronics companies including LG, Samsung, and Sony are working to on a new standard of video connection called HDBaseT, which uses Cat 5e/6 cable to send audio and video information to home theater components.
The Alliance announced its incorporation and the final specifications of HDBaseT on June 29, and it plans to see HDBaseT-compatible devices hit the market in the second half of 2010. According to the Alliance, HDBaseT can send high-definition video, audio, 100BaseT Ethernet, power over cable, and control signals all through a single Cat 5e/6 cable. We'll see in the next half of the year.
