Wes Craven directs this trendsetting first in the slash-hit series. The premise is simple: Freddy homicidally haunts the sleep of Elm Street teens. The results are terrifying and mind-blowingly innovative.

This ones coming out right on the heels of the remake that is due to hit theaters at the end of the month. A classic horror in every way, Nightmare was immensely popular when I was growing up and gave us one of the most popular horror icons ever, Freddy. While the film does come off a bit campy looking back on it now, it is still a piece of horror history with a great villain.

New Line does a surprisingly good job with this transfer. I own a version of this on Blu from Canada and this one is a marked improvement over that release. Film grain is retained, and can be a bit much sometimes, and detail is better than expected. This has a very dated look, but the Blu-ray retains the color and contrast of the production brilliantly. The soundtrack also shows its age but still manages to deliver some chills with its moody score and clever sound design.

New Line delivers some great extras on this one including their focus point feature that allows you to jump in and out of the film for a look at the production and story behind the film. You also get some feature commentaries with the cast and crew and quite the insight into the legacy of this film series and its impact on the horror genre. Last but not least is a coupon for money toward your ticket for the new film.

A classic of the genre and one of the most popular bad guys of all time. New Line does the presentation proud too making this an easy recommendation for fans.
