Audio: 3.5/5
Extras: 2/5
Kate is a single, successful career woman who wants something more: a baby. But she gets more than she bargained for when she hires Angie, a free spirit from South Philly, to be her surrogate in a hysterical mama match-up.
Anyone who has been through a pregnancy will probably get a kick out of this one. I’m not that familiar with the talent involved but that still didn’t keep me from chuckling quite a bit through this one. The story is predictable for the most part but the characters have enough charm to keep the fun going. While not the best comedy I’ve seen this year, it was a good time.
The HD presentation is a bit hit or miss for this one. I thought the detail wavered a bit from time to time with some scenes coming off a bit too soft. Colors looked great and added a nice pop to the image and contrast was decent overall. Close ups looked great throughout but some of the longer shots fell a bit short of the better transfers out there.
The audio is presented in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 but this wasn’t a compelling mix. Given the genre I wasn’t expecting much anyway. Dialogue is always clean and intelligible and the mix has a nice open quality to it. Surrounds provide some subtle ambiance but the mix is a bit on the front heavy side.
Universal has included some U-Control interactivity with a picture-in-picture commentary that can be toggled on and off during the film. A full length audio commentary is also included.
I didn’t have high expectations going into this one but it turned out to be a decent comedy. Universal has done a good job on the A/V transfer but don’t go looking for the bells or whistles. Worth a rental.
