E.T. the Extra Terrestrial makes its first appearance on DVD on Tuesday, October 22. It will be available in three versions: widescreen and pan&scan Limited Collector’s Editions at $29.98 and the Ultimate Gift Boxed Set at $69.98. All three editions include both the original 1982 version and the 2002 release, the latter including a number of alterations and updates.

SGHT readers should be aware that the Limited Edition—and not just the Ultimate Gift Boxed Set—contains both versions of the film. This is not clearly indicated on the Limited Edition’s outside packaging, which might cause an expensive mistake.

The Ultimate set appears to contain most of the features of the Limited, spread out on three discs, a CD of the remastered soundtrack, some collectable printed materials, and more elaborate packaging. If that’s what you want, fine—but as far as the film itself is concerned, the Ultimate Gift Boxed Set contains no more than the cheaper Limited Edition release.
