Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: The Best of Both Worlds—Walt Disney (Blu-ray)

Video: 3.25/5
Audio: 3.5/5
Extras: 3/5

The sold-out concert event that rocked the nation is bursting onto Disney Blu-ray with a 3-D concert experience so real it's like having a backstage pass! "Make Some Noise" and get ready for the year's most eye-popping, dance-in-your-seat music experience. For the first time ever, Miley performs as herself and Hannah in the same epic show!

This was one of the most popular tours of last year but I have to say as a guy in his thirties, it didn’t do ANYTHING for me. This Blu-ray showcases the concert and a bit of the behind the scenes action and the viewer can select between watching the feature in 3-D or standard HD video. This is typical girl pop music that is kid friendly and the production values of the tour are quite good given the audience. But again, this isn’t my type of music.

I watched this one with the 3-D glasses (4 included) for about half the time and the other half without. The glasses aren’t nearly as good as the ones you get at a Real-D presentation and it makes the image look very red and green. There are some interesting 3-D effects now and again and image depth is impressive, but the fatigue and coloring of the image make for a difficult experience. I really preferred it without the glasses. In 2-D mode the image had a nice sense of contrast but fine object detail fell a bit short at times. Colors are great and the production design provides some interesting eye candy but compared to some other recent concerts I’ve watch on Blu-ray, the image fell slightly short.

This is the first Buena Vista title with a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack that I’m aware of. This one is presented in full 7.1 but I was disappointed with the sense of dynamics. This one falls well short of the quality of most of the concerts I’ve watched on Blu-ray. Bass definition, spatial cues and overall dynamics were all lacking and the only thing that was realistic in levels was the crowd noise. The rest of the mix had a compressed feel with no real differences in instruments levels and weak percussion playback. Not nearly what I would expect for this level of presentation and a lossless mix.

Extras include a look at the life of Miley Cyrus along with the new “it” boys, the Jonas Brothers. There is also a sing-along mode for fans of the pop princess.

I know this was meant for a completely different audience than me but I’m still disappointed in the overall presentation. The 3-D worked okay but the quality of the glasses made for a disappointing experience. The audio wasn’t nearly as good as the majority of the concerts available in HD and the video was just a bit above average. I would only recommend this one to diehard fans of Miley.
