In this true-life story, Julie Andrews lights up the screen as Maria, a spirited young woman who leaves the convent to bring love and music to the home of Captain von Trapp and his seven children.

I can’t count how many times I’ve seen this film throughout the years. We used to watch it constantly when it was on TV growing up and of course on VHS and DVD. Never has this film looked even close to this good. The restoration is absolutely gorgeous with all of the detail of the 70mm capture in stunning form. I did notice a little bit of color waver, but it wasn’t nearly as distracting as the beauty of this image. The depth and dimension captured here is far better than I’ve ever seen from any previous release. I love seeing these older films benefit from this level of restoration. The soundtrack is just as marvelous with a full blown 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. Dynamic range holds up quiet well despite the age and I was impressed with the spatial quality of the mix. Some of the panning across the main soundstage seemed a tad exaggerated, but I only noticed this on occasion. Otherwise, like the video, this movie has never sounded better!

Fox includes an extensive array of special features including a picture-in-picture commentary with behind the scenes footage, interviews and more. You also get a new feature commentary with the director and stars of the film. The second disc contains some nice interactive features that let you see the world the film was shot in, more behind the scenes looks at the production and more. A DVD of the film is also included.

Family films don’t get much better than this. One of the most beloved musicals of our time finally gets the treatment it deserves with incredible video and audio. An absolute must own!!
