Toy Story 1 and 2—Walt Disney/Pixar (Blu-ray)

Movies: 5
Picture/Sound: 5/5
Extras: 4.5

Before "Finding Nemo", "Monsters, Inc." and "Cars", the creative minds of Disney/Pixar introduced you to "Toy Story 1 and 2" and an astonishing world where toys play while their owners are away. Rediscover Woody, Buzz Lightyear and all their friends in their adventures filled with humor, heart and friendship.

While Pixar was the first to deliver a digital animation film with “Toy Story”, I don’t think it was the digital part that made it so special. While the animation in both of these films was the cutting edge of its time, the stories are timeless. It is the rich characters and remarkable stories that have compelled me to sit down time and again for Pixar and it was great to see these two gems make their Blu-ray debut.

While the animation may look a bit dated compared to the masterful pieces of art Pixar has put on the screen lately, you’ll be blown away by these incredible Blu-ray transfers. I just saw both of these films recently during their 3D run in digital cinemas. These Blu-rays surpass even those with jaw dropping detail, color and dimension. I’m honestly surprised these films can look this good. Every nuance of the animation is captured perfectly and I was floored by the level of detail and depth these transfers provide. Once again, Pixar raises the bar. On the audio side they even take it a bit further. Gary Rydstrom did some of his best sound design work for these two films and both are showcases for how good surround sound truly can be. Rich ambiance, incredible dynamic range and compelling spatial design delivers some of the best surround sound I’ve heard on the format to date. These films may be a bit older now, but they sure sound incredible!

Extras include the rich supplements found in the previous DVD releases plus some new features. You get a sneak peek at the upcoming Toy Story 3 plus some some new games, animated shorts and reflections on the films. Of course you also get DVD copies of each and a portable copy for your digital device.

I’m surprised these aren’t offered in a box set. Still, I can’t imagine not adding these to the collection. The Blu-ray presentations are pure reference material and the stories don’t get much better. Highly recommended!!
