What Happens In Vegas20th Century Fox (Blu-ray)
Audio: 3.5/5
Extras: 2.75/5
Two strangers awaken together to discover they've gotten married following a night of debauchery in Sin City, and one of them has won a huge jackpot after playing the other's quarter. The newlyweds devise ever-escalating schemes to undermine each other and get their hands on the money - only to find themselves falling in love amid the mutual backstabbing.
I had low expectations going into this one. The trailers didn’t do much for me and the comedy prowess of the stars is always hit or miss. Despite its extreme predictability, I ended up enjoying it far more than I thought I would. There are a lot of great laughs here, especially for anyone familiar with the rigors of married life. While the romance element fell a bit short, this is still a fun film for a date night.
The HD transfer is quite good overall with only a few hiccups along the way. Detail is quite good throughout the film with nice fine detail and dimension but some of the longer shots looked a bit soft. Film grain varies quite a bit throughout the film and almost looks like an issue with mixing stock footage with newer material. Colors are quite vibrant but like the recently reviewed Shutter, the image has a bit of an amber cast to it. This made tans seem a bit too orange at times. Contrast levels are strong and the image has a great sense of depth making for a pleasing image overall.
The audio is presented in 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio and the mix is about what I’d expect from this genre. The music amps things up a bit but some of the environments didn’t deliver the realism I was hoping for. The club scene in Vegas is normally pretty intense in sound but the sequences here fell a bit short in realism. Surrounds do open up the soundstage quite a bit but the mix didn’t deliver that “being there” level of sound. Dialogue is the key to this one and it’s delivered perfectly with great balance and timbre.
This is a two-disc set with a digital copy for PC devices. The main disc also features a commentary along with a couple behind the scenes features including interviews and some funny themed spoofs. A gag reel and deleted scenes are also included along with some trailers.
This one turned out to be a lot funnier than I was expecting and the A/V presentation didn’t disappoint. Anyone on the fence should definitely give this one a look.
