JL Audio Fathom F212 Subwoofer Shaking Things Up

JL Audio is leaking little bits of information about a powerful new subwoofer. The Fathom F212 is said to be a more affordable option compared to their much-acclaimed Gotham G213 which retailed for $12,000. The Fathom F212 is going to retail for $6,000. Some people have a very different idea of affordable than I do.

How does the F212, with dual drivers, differ from purchasing a single F112?

The new F212 uses two 12W7 12-inch drivers.  These drivers are designed to be incredibly durable and able to withstand the heat that's bound to be generated. The built-in amplifier is a Class D amp with a patented feedback loop and a toroidal transformer.

Ht_speaktech_si The drivers are newly designed with lower distortion, so if your budget allows, the F212 is better than two co-located F112 subs.

The F212 will have JL Audio's Automatic Room Optimization - with this much power, you'll want to make sure it's perfectly positioned.

The Fathom F212 is expected to begin shipping on August 1st, and will retail for $6,000.00 for the satin finish, and $6,100 for the Gloss finish. At that price, doesn't it seem odd to charge a hundred bucks more for paint? -Leslie Shapiro
