LG Adds Alexa Voice Control to 2019 TVs

LG today announced the addition of Amazon Alexa voice control to 2019 TVs featuring its ThinQ artificial intelligence (AI) platform.

Slated for rollout through the end of the month, the update will be implemented on AI-equipped UHD, OLED, and NanoCell models. Alexa integration follows the inclusion of Google Assistant on 2018 LG TVs that include ThinQ AI processing.

Using the Alexa app, owners of compatible LG TVs will be able to access thousands of Alexa Skills, play music and audio books, conduct internet searches, and control smart-home products using only voice commands. With Alexa Routines, owners of these TVs will be able to execute multiple tasks — such as listing daily agenda items and providing traffic and weather reports — by saying “Alexa, start my morning.”

LG said its 2019 TV models incorporate an advanced, “more conversational” version of ThinQ technology that can understand hundreds of voice commands and handle complex requests.

The company also announced that a mid-year Apple update will bring AirPlay 2 streaming and HomeKit smart-home control to AI-equipped 2019 OLED TVs and some NanoCell models. With AirPlay 2, owners of these TVs will be able to watch videos via the Apple TV app and enjoy photos and music from connected Apple devices. With HomeKit, they will be able to control the TV via Apple’s Siri and Home apps.
