LG Ships its First Compact Laser Projector

The compact 1080p DLP laser projector LG unveiled at CES in January is now available for $1,500.

Aimed at home theater enthusiasts, the HF80JA ProBeam weighs 4.6 pounds and is built around an “advanced laser engine” said to produce up to 2,000 lumens of brightness, enabling viewers to watch TV and movies in a bright room with a screen size up to 120 inches (diagonal). The laser lamp is rated to last up to 20,000 hours.

Unlike a conventional projector, which is designed for mounting on a ceiling or high shelf, the ProBeam is a décor-friendly “standing design” intended to be transported and placed on the floor. Its I-shaped laser assembly is said to contribute to its portability.

A vertical auto keystone feature automatically detects and corrects image distortion based on the projector’s location vis-à-vis the screen or projection area. Fine adjustments can be made using the projector’s four corner manual keystone alignment control.

The projector is equipped with LG’s webOS smart TV platform—which provides access to Netflix, VuDu, Hulu Plus, and YouTube—and includes the company’s Magic Remote for navigating its onscreen interface. It also supports the Miracast display standard, which enables video content on a smartphone or tablet/PC screen to be “mirrored” on the projector, wireless content sharing over a home network via LG’s TV Plus App, and Bluetooth connectivity so sound can be streamed wirelessly to a Bluetooth-enabled speaker or headphones.

Two HDMI and two USB (Type A) inputs are provided along with analog (minijack) and digital (optical) audio outputs.
