The Lord of the Rings hitting Blu-ray in April, theatrical only
Many of us have been waiting rather patiently for Peter Jackson's epic, Lord of the Rings trilogy to hit our preferred format, but this isn't exactly what we had in mind. On April 6th, 2010, the first LotR Blu-ray release will hit shelves toting only the theatrical versions of the movie and a handful of extra features, as well as digital copies of each movie. Amazon currently has the set for pre-order for $69.99 (discounted from its $99 suggested retail price). That means we'll have to keep waiting for the extended versions to make their way to BD. I can only hope that it's taking so long because they're doing something to make them a truly remarkable and definitive experience, like Watchmen. I'll probably give the theatrical versions a rental and buy the extended versions when they finally drop. Until then, I'll be watching the DVD versions, swapping discs in the middle of the film. Or, I guess I could watch the up-converted TNT version on cable...no, I'm not quite that desperate.
