Nikon's S1000pj camera-projector now shipping
If you have $430 in your pocket, you can order your new Nikon S1000pj right now and expect it as fast as retailers can ship it. According to Engadget, Nikon's camera-plus-projector is now shipping from various online retailers like Ritz and Beach Camera.
The 12-megapixel point-and-shoot camera is the first to feature a built-in digital projector. Its humble VGA imager and 10-lumens lamp won't let it replace any decent home theater projector (or even most pico-projectors on the market), but it does let users share their photos and videos with friends without handing off their camera, uploading their media, or otherwise dealing with things like "letting go of their new gadget."
Last week, I had a chance to play with the S1000pj. It's a neat little camera and the projector seems to work about as well as expected for its tiny size. Because it's so small, you're going to want to turn the lights down and place the camera relatively close to the wall to get the best effect. Nikon says the projector can throw up to 6 feet 6 inches and produce up to a 40 inch image, but for such a small device I'd be a lot more conservative with how I use it.
The day of the pico-projector isn't here yet, but if you'd like your own, built into a digital camera, for a relatively modest $430, the Nikon S1000pj is the choice for you. Hey, early adoption has its price.
