Onkyo has expanded its 2018 AV receiver lineup with a 7.2-channel model that costs only $400.

The new TX-SR383, described as a “future-ready hub for connecting HDR-ready media players and television sets,” offers the choice of 7.2-channel soundtrack reproduction or 5.2-channel surround sound plus powered audio distribution to speakers in a second listening area.

Rated power output at 8 ohms is 7 x 80 watts via discrete analog amplifiers and the receiver has four HDMI inputs, one of which supports passthrough of 4K/60p high-dynamic-range HDR10 and HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) content as well as video with 4:4:4 color and HDCP 2.2 copy protection. A CEC-compliant HDMI output with ARC (Audio Return Channel) makes it possible to run TV sound from ARC-ready displays through the receiver. Other connections include composite video inputs, optical and coaxial digital audio inputs, and analog audio inputs.

The receiver supports wireless streaming from Bluetooth/aptX devices and is equipped with DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD surround processing — either of which can be used with back surround or front height speakers to enhance immersion — and Onkyo’s AccuEQ calibration system, which adjusts speaker parameters based on room acoustics.

Onkyo’s Music Optimizer uses a DSP algorithm to “restore lost bit information for objectively better sound when playing compressed audio files.”
