Onkyo’s New $649 AV Receiver Is THX-Certified
The new TX-NR686 ($649) and TX-NR585 ($549) support 4K video, hi-res audio, and DTS:X and Dolby Atmos surround sound processing for 5.2.2 speaker layouts while the NR686 distinguishes itself with a 7 x 100 watt (8 ohms with 0.08 percent THD) THX Select-certified amplifier to ensure “reference level performance.” The TX-NR585 is rated to deliver 7 x 80 watts (8 ohms with 0.08 percent THD).
Other shared features include HDCP 2.2-compatible HDMI inputs and outputs — including a front-panel input on the TX-NR686 — and support for the high dynamic range formats HDR10, HLG, and Dolby Vision. Both models also include Onkyo’s AccuEQ automated calibration system, which adjusts speaker parameters based on room acoustics to improve the sound, and adds an AccuReflex component that performs phase matching for systems using Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers with up-firing “height” drivers.
Music options for both receivers include access to Amazon Music, Tidal, TuneIn, Deezer, Pandora and Spotify streaming services in addition to support for Bluetooth streaming, AirPlay, DTS Play-Fi, and Chromecast built-in with Google Assistant voice control available for compatible devices — all controllable via the Onkyo Music Control App.
Zone 2 powered speaker outputs enable music playback in a second room while the main system is operating in surround-sound mode and employ a DAC for playing the same or different digital sources in either or both rooms.
