Runco's Big Acquisitions

October 7, 2002 - Runco International has recently acquired the assets of Vidikron and Projectavision. Both brands had hit the skids due to serious marketing and management difficulties, and both will be revived as independent brand names under the Runco umbrella, according to a September 27 announcement.

Vidikron was known for stylish upscale three-gun CRT projectors. Projectavision, which has ceased all production, specialized in lightweight single-lens projectors whose performance was hampered by relatively low light output and low contrast ratio compared to today's best DLP and D-ILA models.

Runco CEO Sam Runco noted that the acquisition will allow the Union City, CA-based company "to effectively serve a much greater segment of the consumer video market, while bringing the product performance, quality, and reliability Runco has established in the high-end segment to a whole new base of customers…who until now had found Runco out of their economic grasp."

Runco is well-known for its front- and rear-projection video systems, as well as plasma screens and video processors. The company will develop full product lines for both brands and will make initial product introductions at the 2003 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The announcement about the acquisition of Vidikron and Projectavision was made in late September at the CEDIA Expo in Minneapolis.
