SI Debuts Perforated Versions of Slate & Pure Screens

Screen Innovations (SI) has announced acoustically transparent versions of its Slate Slate and Pure series projection screens.

“Merging Slate and Pure with our acoustic perforation technology has truly created the best of both worlds, picture and sound,” said CEO Ryan Gustafson.

The philosophy behind Slate acoustically transparent material is that the screen should not be a distraction for the viewer but add to or improve the experience. “Hiding your speakers behind the screen is another way that this is accomplished,” said Tom Nugent, SI’s chief of technology. “We are perforating over 28000, 0.55mm holes for every square foot; clearly a daunting task.”

Lab testing conducted by an industry-leading speaker manufacturer revealed “very few acoustic ramifications over the full audio frequency spectrum,” according to SI.

“The effect of the perforated screen has very little attenuation starting at about 1-2 kHz,” Nugent said. “Typical impact on frequency response is well within the –3db range with a peak attenuation of –6db at 20 kHz. This difference is easily corrected by most modern receivers with room correction. Additionally, many architectural speakers feature a treble compensation switch to adjust for this type of installation.”

Perforated versions of Slate and Pure screens can be configured in SI’s Zero Edge, Zero-G, Fixed, and Motorized form factors.
