Simaudio Aims to Improve Vinyl Playback with New Phono Preamp

Quebec’s Simaudio has introduced a little black box for vinyl enthusiasts who are looking to up their game.

Designed for use with turntables that lack a phono stage or to replace an existing (mediocre) phono stage, the Moon 110LP v2 phono preamp ($399) has a 24-volt power supply and provides user adjustable impedance loading (47kΩ, 475Ω, 100Ω, 10Ω), capacitance loading (0pF, 100pF, 330pF, 430pF), and gain (40dB, 50dB, 54dB, 60dB, 66dB), the latter to accommodate moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges.

Adjustments are made via DIP switches hidden on the bottom of the unit and you can select an IEC or RIAA response curve.

The preamp is housed in an aluminum chassis with gold-plated RCA connectors and uses inductive DC filtering for a “significantly lower noise floor” and four-layer, pure copper PCB tracings for “low-impedance characteristics.”

At 5 x 1.6 x 6.5 inches, the box is small enough to fit just about anywhere. Simaudio offers a 10-year warranty.
