Tracking Surround: Barenaked Ladies DVD

Talk to the Hand: Live in Michigan Shout! Factory DVD

These witty guys have been longtime supporters of surround sound. (And in case you don't have it, the DVD-Audio-equipped "Deluxe Edition 5.1" of their current studio twofer, Barenaked Ladies Are Me, is available again at becausesoundmatters.com.) Alas, Paul Forgues's mix of their new live set - released on both standalone DVD-Video and CD+DVD - is merely what you'd expect from any ol' concert title: lead vocals stretched across the three front channels, music concentrated in the left and right, and audience/instrumental ambience in the surrounds. Still, the sonics themselves are crisp and strong, as the band runs through a solid, 15-track retrospective with a minimum of fuss, no fancy staging, and a wardrobe straight from Wal-Mart. Extras are minimal: a 12-minute video of the Ladies sharing war stories, a one-song soundcheck, and some photos.
