To Randy,
A quick note about LCD televisions (florescent)...If you didn't like the blacks on the C530 Samsung, you probably won't like the black level on most LCD TVs. Try finding a 46" C650 or C750 and see if you like it any better. Those have the "clear" panels that tend to boost up the contrast level for better black performance.
Now $700 for the C530 is a pretty good deal, but it is lacking features such as a higher frame rate (120hz), and network functionality. Now if you have another network device this becomes a moot point, but the frame-rates will probably benefit you if you watch sports or play video games or watch action films.
I would agree with Scott about the Panasonic plasmas. If you want to get a 46" model, check out the TCP-46S30 (non 3D), or the TCP-46ST30 (3D). If you're willing to step up price-wise to an LED model, but want a very cool product, and don't care about the 60hz, check out the Sony Google TV. The first models are being replaced by Gen. 2 soon, and for the money that TV has a very nice picture, and CRAZY features to boot (I have the 40" in my bedroom and I am VERY happy).
Also note that most LED tvs and Plasmas will have either a clear panel (that means shiny), or be covered by a glass panel, so glare with may be an issue. Check out the Sony KDL46EX620 and KDL46EX720 for a 120hz/240hz LED based unit. Also don't rule out the Sharp LC46LE830u. The Sharp is a really good buy in my opinion. Pretty solid picture, good black levels, EXCELLENT energy consumption (it sips power), and it maintains the matte finish screen with LED edge lighting, 120hz and has BUILT IN WIFI!! No dongle needed.
To Jim,
I've had clients ask me a similar question about CC and muting. My recommendation for you to get "MUTE" and "CC" to work together would be to purchase a universal remote that you program custom Macro commands into. That way with "1 button press" you could have a command sent to... 1. Mute TV and 2. Turn on CC (its not as good as it being hardware driven from the manufacturer, but it definitely works).
Also have you played around at all with the CC functions that are built into the CABLE/SAT STB that you have? You may want to try muting from that remote, and pulling up CC from the Cable/Sat STB remote (although if you have Time Warner this won't work cuz CC is built into the menu as a function and is not a toggle command on the remote, just FYI).
