Yes, RadioShack Stores Still Exist

You probably won’t find a RadioShack in your local mall anymore but you might find one in a small town...like Sitka in southeastern Alaska.

It's been years since I've seen a RadioShack store so I was surprised to see the iconic red "R" logo on a building in this port town, which has a population of around 8,200. A small sign next to the door read Alaska Computer & Office Supply Center, suggesting a greater mission, but when I walked in there were several aisles lined with dozens and dozens of small electronic items and accessories — just as you'd expect to see in a RadioShack.

I was greeted by the owner who was about to lock up for the night but more than willing to chat. I noted how the brand was a long way from its glory days when the then Texas-based company operated 5,000 stores in the U.S and 3,000 more overseas. Acknowleding this reality, the owner said he had operated the store under license for many years and had been unable to get RS-branded merchandise for quite some time.

The new corporate owners that assumed control of the brand in 2023 were slow to get things off the ground, he noted with a tinge of frustration in his voice. But all of that was about to change, he quickly added, pointing to the new RS-branded power bank hanging on the the display rack I was standing in front of. If all went according to plan, this would be the first many RadioShack- branded products to follow.

After a long torturous decline, RadioShack filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2015. Not long after, Unicomer of El Salvador paid $5 million for the exclusive rights to the RadioShack brand in Central and South America, and the Caribbean. And last year, the company secured exclusive rights in an another 70 countries, including the U.S and Canada.

There are currently 37 authorized RadioShack resellers in the U.S., according to radioshack.com. We'll have to wait and see if the Shack can make a bona fide comeback. Who knows, maybe they'll even bring back Realistic brand gear.
