Goldfinger—MGM (Blu-ray)

From the opening bomb blast outside a steamy nightclub to a last-minute escape from the president's personal jet, James Bond's third screen adventure is an exhilarating, pulse-pounding thrill-ride! Sean Connery takes command as Agent 007 and faces off with a maniacal villain bent on destroying all the gold in Fort Knox - and obliterating the world economy!

Easily my favorite of the Sean Connery Bond films, Goldfinger was the first Bond film to really up the ante in terms of scope, production and action. To me this was the turn of the series despite the strength of the two films before it. A must own for any fan of the series.

Wow. Fox has just done an amazing job bringing the classic Bond films to Blu-ray and every time I pop one in I’m amazed. These films look better than a good number of the new titles out there. Goldfinger just looks impeccable with outstanding fine detail and depth. The image has a wonderful sense of dimensionality and almost looks like it was shot yesterday. Sure there are some limitations in the effects shots, but they are hardly a distraction. Bond has never ever looked this good.

The 5.1 DTS-HD mix is actually pretty engrossing thanks to the new remixes. Surrounds come alive quite a bit through the film and the balance of the channels is solid. Dynamic range is still lacking a bit due to the age of the film but it is never a distraction. Dialogue sounds clean despite the obvious ADR and I didn’t notice any signs of strain. While it can’t quite compete with the newer action soundtracks out there, it still delivers for its time.

Extras are similar to the rest of the Bond films hitting Blu and do a great job for fans of the series. You get two feature commentaries; one with the director and the other with the cast and crew of the film. There are plenty of interviews and production features and I liked the retrospective on the film’s success and impact on the series as a whole. All the original publicity, including the trailers, are also included.

One of the best gets a superb Blu-ray presentation. Fox has really outdone themselves with these presentations and I cannot wait to add them all to my collection. A must have!
