One of LCD's key weapons in its competition against plasma is LED backlighting, which provides superior black level reproduction compared to old-school CCFL (fluorescent) backlighting. But don't count CCFL out just yet. A new type may enable it to hold onto the lower end of the LCD market.

That's the news out of Japan, where Sanken Electric says it has developed a new form of CCFL backlighting that is 60 percent less costly. Lower cost does not translate into better performance, so there's no prospect that CCFL would dislodge LED at the upper end of the LCD market. But at the lower end of the market, where price reigns supreme, the new CCFL may have a better chance to establish itself.
