Are 3D and wireless home video distribution both equally important to you? Then you'll be glad to hear that the Wireless Home Digital Interface will support all the 3D formats included in the HDMI 1.4a specifications. The updated spec will be released in the fourth quarter of this year.

Following that, there will be a new WHDI 2.0 standard. It will embrace 3D in dual 1080p, 4K x 2K ultra-def resolution, and integration with wi-fi and mobile devices. Look for the WHDI 2.0 spec in the second quarter of 2011.

WHDI will be able to work with Blu-ray players, set-top boxes, PCs, game consoles, and mobile devices (such as notebooks, tablets, and handsets). It supports 1080p/60Hz at data rates of up to 3Gbps, in a 40MHz channel in the 5GHz unlicensed band, with range beyond 100 feet and latency of less than a millisecond.

The WHDI consortium includes Amimon, the dominant chipmaker, as well as Hitachi, LG, Motorola, Samsung, Sharp, and Sony. WHDI already has 70 percent of market share for wireless video and is expected to have 75 percent by 2015, according to West Technology Research Solutions.
