Home theater fans looking for one component that will do everything should look no further than Denon’s new AVR-5800 receiver. With seven channels of high-wattage amplification, a subwoofer output, and high-resolution internal digital-to-analog converters, the AVR-5800 is also the first home theater product designed to accommodate DTS-ES Discrete 6.1, the recently-announced surround sound format from acoustic effects pioneer Digital Theater Systems.

The DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 format employs a new, proprietary technology for the playback of discrete, 6.1-channel content from both DVDs and CDs. This latest innovation from DTS elevates the performance standard for playback of the DTS 6.1-channel Extended Surround format introduced in motion picture theaters last year. Movies and music discs specially mixed for DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 will be available later this summer, according to the company.

Home theater fans who want to be ready for this breakthrough should begin looking for the Denon AVR-5800 in August, when it is scheduled to ship to dealers. Signal processing in the unit is provided by two Analog Devices SHARC 32-bit floating point DSP processors--the most advanced DSP devices on the market--along with 16 of Analog Devices' reference AD-1853 24-bit/192-kilohertz DACs. The AVR-5800 is a versatile performer, programmed to decode DTS-ES Matrix 6.1, DTS Neo:6, Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic, THX Surround EX, THX 5.1, and THX 4.0. The unit also provides a variety of additional DSP modes plus standard two-channel audio.
