Active shutter glasses are useful for displaying 3D video because they get rid of the "ghosting" that can appear with passive glasses. Active glasses work by using liquid crystal lenses to rapidly switch on and off between the two eyes, ensuring that the correct image is shown on the correct eye at the correct time. Unfortunately, "crosstalk"- the phenomenon of one eye partially seeing what the other eye should be seeing- can cause headaches and disrupts the experience.

Toshiba is working on new LCDs to serve as the lenses in active shutter glasses. These new lenses take just 0.1ms to close, and just 1.8ms to open, and produce only 0.1% crosstalk. The new LCDs will feature in future active-shutter 3D glasses.
