CES Press Day: Pioneer AppRadio 2

At their Monday press conference the day before the CES officially opens, Pioneer focused on their car electronics line. Ted Cardenas, director of marketing for that division, introduced the Pioneer AppRadio 2 ($499), a mech-less head unit that “rethinks connectivity.” With a completely connected head unit, you can not only listen to your existing music collection — from your phone, a USB drive, or even Pandora, but you can also stream Internet radio, enjoying constant exposure to new music from around the world. Closer to home, the AppRadio 2 had a built-in AM/FM tuner and HD Radio so users can hear local news, weather, and advertisements. Yes, hearing about local sales, events, or concerts might be of interest to some listeners.

While the original AppRadio was only compatible with iOS, AppRadio 2 is compatible with HDMI and MHL-connected Android phones, as well as with iPhone 4 and 4S systems. The capacitive touchscreen measures 7 inches diagonal and supports all of the multi-touch gestures consumers are accustomed to using on their smartphones. There are two RCA pre-amp outputs, unlike the original AppRadio’s single output, along with a back-up camera input and a remote input for steering wheel controls, and the unit has Bluetooth for hands-free calling.

Pioneer’s intent with the AppRadio 2 is to bring safe and intuitive technology to the user. They’ve opened it up to developers to bring even more features to users. As more and more people center their entertainment and lifestyles around their phones, With the AppRadio 2, Pioneer makes it easier for them to bring it all on the road.
