Blu-ray Review: Treme Page 4

Each episode includes piecemeal (but directly accessible) mini-commentaries on the musical sequences by Josh Jackson of New Jersey radio station WBGO and Patrick Jarenwattananon of NPR. This great idea is spoiled, however, by the pair’s lazy and under-researched observations. Here’s hoping that the Blu-ray of Season 2 features New Orleans-based music historians in this role.

Two onscreen pop-up features are unique to the Blu-ray edition and help illuminate the music, individual characters, local phraseology, neighborhoods, and cuisine. Although undeniably lightweight, this material is at least consistently amusing.

Taken as a whole, the entire package of extras does an admirable job of getting across enough background to enrich and illuminate the Treme experience.
