These days, it's rare to see people sinking a lot of money into things. Shaky economy, future's uncertain, blah blah blah. Remarkably, media player project Boxee has managed to secure 6 big ones for its development.

Venture capital companies General Catalyst, Spark Capital, and Union Square Ventures have put $6 million toward Boxee, helping ensure that the player will some day hit prime time. The player is still only in alpha version for Windows, but its extensive set of media streaming services and open, expansion-friendly design makes it a very tempting piece of software around which to design a home theater PC or set-top box.
