Amazon Upgrades Alexa Digital Assistant

Amazon has introduced new ways to discover and enable skills for Alexa, the digital assistant that made a name for itself as the voice interface for the popular Echo Bluetooth speaker.

The skills section of the Alexa app has been redesigned so you can now use your voice to enable and access skills instantly—saying “Alexa, enable NBC News,” for example—browse categories such as “Smart Home” and “Lifestyle,” apply search filters, and access previously enabled skills.

Amazon opened Alexa to developers last year, making it easy (and free) for them to build her into third-party products. Today, tens of thousands of developers are creating skills for Alexa, which now total more than 1,400, according to the company. Lyft and Honeywell are the latest developers to adopt Alexa.

A few fun facts:

• Since January 2016, the selection of smart home skills has grown more than five-fold
• Consumers have made over 3 million requests using the top 10 most popular Alexa skills, including Jeopardy!, Daily Affirmation, Magic 8 Ball, Fitbit, and The Bartender
• More than 10,000 registered developers use the Alexa Voice Service to integrate Alexa into their products
• The Alexa Fund has invested in 16 startups, with a focus on smart home and wearable products, and plans to expand into robotics, healthcare, and other areas
