Super Mario Run(s) to Android

The iconic videogame character Mario is on the move again in the app world. This time he’s heading for Android.

Nintendo announced that Super Mario Run, which made its iOS debut 10 days before Christmas, will be released for Android in March.

The app was downloaded nearly 3 million times in its first day, making it the biggest launch in the history of the App Store. Less than a week later, Mario was soaring with 50 million downloads under his belt. On Apple devices you can download the app and take Run for a test drive before making a one-time payment of $9.99 to gain full, unlimited access.

Nintendo has yet to announce whether the Android version of the game will have the same “paywall” pricing that has been criticized as being too high. We’ll have to wait and see.

In the game, developed under the direction of Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, Mario is on a “world tour” featuring six worlds with 24 courses designed for one-handed play where you “travel through plains, caverns, haunted houses, airships, castles, and more.”

The lovable hero runs forward on his own, but relies on finger taps to jump over obstacles, avoid enemies, pull off stylish moves, collect coins, and reach the flagpole to complete courses.
