When does technology go too far? It’s a question that comes up frequently these days. Here’s one potential example.

Beijing, China-based PowerVision Technology Group has introduced PowerRay, a mini submarine robot designed to “revolutionize freshwater, saltwater, or ice fishing for today's recreational fishing enthusiasts and casual hobbyists.”

The device has an integrated 4K camera that sends underwater photos and video to a mobile app in real time in addition to sending underwater data such as temperature, fish-identifying images, and alerts when you attach an optional FishFinder module that uses sonar to detect fish. All this to enable high-tech fishermen to “make spontaneous decisions.”

Using the app, fishermen can also view the real-time position of the PowerRay and select travel modes, speed, and light settings for underwater photography and videography.

Enthusiasts who want to tech-out and make fishing even easier can add a remotely operated bait drop—an arm extending from the top of the PowerRay that positions a hook with bait (sorry, you have to bait the hook) in front of the ’bot’s camera.

Yet another option provides an immersive first person view experience where users control the robot through a wearable device or interact with fish through a “fun and engaging gaming experience.” PowerRay also supports an optional PowerVision VR Goggle that uses virtual reality technology to provide a “thrilling underwater view.” Gravity and gesture recognition capabilities built into the headset allow users to interact with and control the robot’s movement via head tilting.
