Epson Unveils New High-Performance Home Cinema Projectors

Epson today announced the availability of two new projectors in its Home Cinema line, the 5050UB ($2,999) and 5050UBe 4K PRO-UHD2 ($3,299). Both models are available now through select online retailers and at Epson’s online store.

The new projectors feature 2,600 lumens of equal color and white brightness, HDR10 high dynamic range support, and 10-bit color output. Wide color gamut capability allows for full display of the P3 color gamut, and Epson’s proprietary Pixel-Shift Processor2 “precisely controls three individual high-definition LCD chips” to yield an "exceptionally sharp 4K visual experience," according to the company.

Other video features common to both projectors include HDMI 2.0 inputs supporting 4K/60Hz signals with HDR, up to 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast, and a proprietary UltraBlack compensation filter that eliminates light leakage in the projector through the use of polarization. Both units also employ 12-bit video processing to remove banding and other video compression-related artifacts.

Installation features on the new models are led by a 3-Axis motorized lens offering up to 96 percent vertical and 47 percent horizontal shift. Ten lens memory presets are provided to store all settings, including zoom and focus, while a 16-step HDR curve adjustment permits fine control when calibrating the projector to display HDR content. Epson’s Home Cinema 5050UBe model additionally features the company’s WirelessHD transmitter to wirelessly send up to 4K/30 signals directly to the projector.

I was hoping they'd employ lasers in more of their home projectors- especially the UB line. Given the 5040 can still be found for under $2000, this news is very underwhelming.

I was waiting (hoping and praying) for Epson to drop a Native 4k laser projector for under $5,000. They plain blew it. Sony and JVC are now the choice brands for Videophiles.
