If you think this is a story about a horse, you’re only halfway there. On the surface, Flicka is a film about a wild horse that is accidentally found by Katy (Alison Lohman), a headstrong, horse-loving teenager, while she tries to escape the confines of her father’s expectations—and a mountain lion. The parallel between the struggles of Katy and Flicka—man trying to contain nature—is typical at best. But, for this horse enthusiast, it works.

Before you even notice what the story is about, you’re mesmerized by the breathtaking landscape of New Zealand…er…“Wyoming.” The 2.35:1 anamorphic presentation brings out the verdant terrain and opulent blue sky that could only be experienced in the nearly unblemished countryside. The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack certainly brings a welcome boost to your bass and surrounds; you’re almost sure there’s a stampede behind you. This release falls short in the extras department, however. Along with the standard director’s audio commentary, you can look forward to just a few deleted scenes, bloopers, and an exclusive look at Tim McGraw’s music video for “My Little Girl.” (McGraw also plays Katy’s father.)

You don’t necessarily have to love horses to enjoy Flicka. At times, the story is a bit dull, and I often wonder if horses get tired of being typecast as the reined-in mustang that will always remain wild at heart. Even so, it’s worth saddling up for, if only to be reminded of what it feels like to be free.
