Cablevision Launches Voom

HDTV fans suddenly have more to choose from. On October 16, New York-based Cablevision Systems made good on its promise to deliver high-definition programming from the sky, with the launch of its Rainbow DBS (direct broadcast satellite) service.

Known as "Voom," the new service is available nationally and includes 21 channels of 1080i programming produced by Cablevision subsidiary Rainbow Media. It also includes 21 channels of standard definition programming, including MTV, Starz! and Showtime. Voom will expand its offerings over the next few months, eventually offering 39 HDTV channels and 88 SD channels by as early as February 2004.

Channels to be added include NFL Network, Discovery HD Theater, Playboy HD, and two distinct HBO HD channels. Cablevision is emphasizing its HD programming as a way of distinguishing itself from established satellite services DirecTV and EchoStar, according to Rainbow DBS COO Mickey Albert. "We are differentiating ourselves by becoming HDTV-centric, offering 21 exclusive HDTV channels supplemented with other HD channels, complimented with various standard definition services," Albert explained.

Voom's HD programming includes HD Cinema 10, with ten channels of feature films; Monster HD, round-the-clock classic monster movies; World Sport, athletics from throughout the planet; Rush HD, full-time "extreme" sports; Rave HD, music videos; Gallery HD, devoted to great art and architecture; Treasure HD, about collectibles and collectors; Animania, classic cartoons and award-winning animation; and News Bytes HD, offering news, weather and sports.

A Rainbow DBS system is needed to receive Voom - an 18" satellite dish antenna for DBS, a Channel Master rooftop antenna for local digital broadcasts, and a Motorola-built set-top box decoder with component video HD outputs, a DVI-HDCP connection, S-Video and composite outputs, and a USB-2 port. Coming generations of Rainbow receivers will feature IEEE 1394 connections. The complete package including installation sells for $749.99, and is available directly through the Voom website or through Sears stores nationwide.

Sears will carry Rainbow DBS systems through January and may renew the contract through the remainder of 2004. During the promotional period running through January, charter subscribers can sign up for $39.90 per month, for a package that includes Voom's 21 HD channels, 40 SD channels, 18 music channels, and one "HD Plus Pack."
