Hi Mark,Long time reader of HT. In your review of the 806, I was wondering if you tried the direct and/or pure direct mode when playing CD's. I have the previous model, the 805, and when you select either of these functions, the subwoofer output is disabled. Doesn't make much such to feature these modes if your subwoofer is disabled, as you cannot take advantage of the purer sound. It does output in the stereo mode and all the Dolby/DTS modes.Regards,James Gasta

how does the onkyo 806 compare to the pioneer vsx 03 txh?

Mark, Your review is very helpful. One issue that I've heard about with these receivers are overheating. The users who have had to send the receiver back a couple of times all claim they have proper cooling etc... I want this receiver but am now concerned about the heating. Mark:Your review of the Onkyo TX-SR806 came out just in time. In January I purchased the Onkyo TX-SR706 and love it. I have experimented quite a lot with Audyssey and the various THX modes. I find that MultEQ makes a significant improvement in the sound of my room. However, I find Dynamic EQ to be a mixed bag. Like you, I found Dynamic EQ moved the soundfield too far forward. The surrounds were over accentuated and the bass somewhat bloated. After much experimentation, I found that both the surround levels and bass levels, as calibrated by MultEQ had to be dropped by 2 to 3 db. Bass sounded definitely better, but the soundstage was still odd.With THX Loudness Plus, I find that the surrounds stay audible at any level but do not become overwhelming. With bass, I prefer to INCREASE the bass levels calculated by MultEQ by 1 to 1.5 db. The soundstage seems more natural, locked in place around the front speakers but with good surround effects.Bottom line: MultEQ w/THX Loudness Plus works best for me.

I have the Onkyo PR-SC886 and I have a dedicated 7.1 Home Theater Room with room treatments. I also am an Audyssey Pro Installer. So I ran the MultEQ Pro Calibration w/ 13 measuring positions and set everything up. I still need more time to form a final opinion but here are my initial impressions. I'm listening around -20dB which is pretty loud to me.With Dynamic EQ on the bass level and surround levels can be a little too much. To compensate for this I use the Onkyo's Intellivolume feature to turn down the sources input by 3 to 4 dB. This tricks DEQ to thinking the volume is louder than it really is and tames DEQ to just the right level.Loudness Plus is less aggressive with the bass and as mentioned above applies different algorithms to Music modes. I like that, but it just doesn't seem to provide the same impact as Dynamic EQ.
