Industry Group Highlights New HDR10+ Game Titles

HDR10+ Technologies LLC, the industry group behind the HDR10+ high dynamic range (HDR) video format, today offered a preview of the game titles it will be showcasing at CES 2024, which opens Tuesday in Las Vegas.

The titles are among the first to support the HDR10+ Gaming extension of the HDR10+ standard Samsung launched in partnership with Panasonic and 20th Century Fox (now 20th Century Studios) in 2017.

Heading up the list is The First Descendant from Nexon Studios, which was announced last September and is now scheduled for release this summer; the title can be played on most current PCs, according to HDR10+ Technologies.

The HDR10+ version of the highly acclaimed first-person shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 — the third and final installment in the Modern Warfare Trilogy and the eighth Call of Duty title to date — was released in November, and an updated HDR10+ Gaming user interface is slated for release in “early 2024.”

Cyberpunk 2077, an action/adventure role playing game featuring rockstar-turned-terrorist Johnny Silverhand, enables players to explore the secrets of a powerful cybernetic implant. The game was released in early December and is packaged with Phantom Liberty, a new spy thriller that takes a deep dive into the shadowy world of espionage and political struggle. Both games are available for PC.

“HDR10+ elevates the color experience in Cyberpunk 2077 to an entirely new level,” said Przemek Czatrowski, engineering manager of rendering at game developer CD Projekt Red. “Our engine harnesses HDR10+ technology, along with the full capabilities of compatible screens, to produce frames calibrated specifically for each individual monitor. This ensures the best performance on all HDR10+ supported hardware.”

The titles are the first in a series of HDR10+ capable games expected to be announced during 2024.

“The use of HDR10+ technologies has grown exponentially to fully encompass a variety of platforms and providers,” said Bill Mandel, co-manager of HDR10+ Technologies LLC. “Now with the availability of plug-in cards from Nvidia, game studios and developers can also realize the full benefits of HDR10+ Gaming on certified monitors and televisions.”

A direct extension of the basic HDR10 format, which uses “one-size fits all” static metadata that remains the same throughout a movie or other program, HDR10+ employs dynamic metadata to produce more lifelike color, brightness, and contrast by providing data on a frame-by-frame basis. HDR10+ is an open, royalty-free competitor to the more prevalent Dolby Vision HDR format.

HDR10+ Gaming extends the benefits of HDR10+ to game content and compatible displays, automatically calibrating HDR levels between them. The HDR10+format today has more than 150 adopters and is supported on almost 9,000 devices, according to HDR10+ Technologies.

The development of HDR10+ was completely unnecessary. It provides nothing over Dolby Vision and creates an unwanted format war. Competitors like Sony and LG will never support it. And Samsung owners can't enjoy the benefits of Dolby Vision. This is the main reason I wouldn't consider purchasing a Samsung television. Thanks for nothing, Samsung.
