B&O Play Unveils Sleek Bluetooth Speaker

B&O Play, a division of Denmark’s Bang & Olufsen that focuses on portable products, has introduced a sleek take-anywhere Bluetooth speaker designed to fit comfortably in the palm of your hand.

The 5 x 2-inch round speaker weighs just over a pound and features a contoured aluminum cover and moulded polymer base with a leather strap. The combination of adaptive power management and a 2200mAh lithium-ion battery is said to keep the speaker playing for up to 24 hours.

The A1 uses a “DSP algorithm with advanced high slope filtering…to create a spacious 360-degree soundscape” from its aluminum woofer and 0.75-inch soft-dome tweeter. B&O Play claims the combination of “high peak power amps” and the woofer’s neodymium magnetic system can produce bass as low as 40 Hz. The A1 also has a built-in microphone so it can be used as a speakerphone.

The speaker sells for $249 on beoplay.com.

“We wanted to make a portable speaker that people would not leave at home,” said designer Cecilie Manz. “The size and shape of the speaker invites you to pick it up and bring it with you as the most natural thing.”
