Each of these thrillers pits a strong woman against a cunning villain in the claustrophobic confines of an airplane. In Flightplan, Jodie Foster, playing a widow looking for her missing daughter, gives a riveting performance that raises the level of this lugubrious, logic-challenged movie. In Red Eye, Rachel McAdams is fine as the hotel desk manager who must outwit a terrorist, but it's Wes Craven's capable direction that keeps the adventure tight and breezy. Both DVDs have a good picture, with Red Eye's a bit sharper and less grainy than Flightplan's. The sound of Red Eye is more open and clean, favoring the music, while Flightplan's creaking and clanking are very effective, despite the film's bombastic score. Each disc includes a dutiful commentary and several mediocre promotional featurettes. Both: [PG-13] English and French, Dolby Digital 5.1; letterboxed (2.35:1) and anamorphic widescreen; dual layer.
