A Look at Last Night's Technical Oscar Winners

A few weeks ago we took a look at what we consider to be the most underrated categories at The Academy Awards. Now, the trophies have all been handed out, and it's our duty to look back at the Academy's decision and second guess them around the huge, digital water cooler that is the Internet.

Best Art Direction
Our prediction: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Winner: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
With so many different eras represented, it must have been hell trying to fight off anachronisms. Everything looked excellent and we're glad they were recognized for their OCD-level attention to detail.

Best Cinematography
Our prediction: The Dark Knight
Winner: Slumdog Millionaire
Maybe picking The Dark Knight was more wishful thinking than it was a real prediction, but we're still sold on our choice. It was Slumdog's night in the end, though.

Best Film Editing
Our prediction: Slumdog Millionaire
Winner: Slumdog Millionaire
It was just a hunch, but something told us the Academy would get behind Slumdog in this one.

Best Sound Editing
Our prediction: The Dark Knight
Winner: Slumdog Millionaire
Really? It's not an outrageous pick since the film was done extremely well, but when you were leaving the theater, you probably weren't talking about how good the sound was like many of us were walking out of the Dark Knight.

Best Sound Mixing
Our prediction: Wall-E
Winner: The Dark Knight
We're glad to see that TDK actually did get some recognition for its killer audio. Seeing that movie in IMAX, the gunshots were almost painful in a fantastic way. We also feel a little bad for Wanted being in there with absolutely zero chance of going home with the win.

Best Visual Effects
Our Prediction: Iron Man
Winner: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
We have to give the Benjamin Button crew for coming up with an incredibly innovative way to make Brad Pitt age backwards, but the award is about affects that a movie couldn't have existed without. Iron Man had so many visual effects that the potential for cheesy-looking CG was off the charts. But they pulled it off to look incredible and we thought that deserved some credit. Maybe in Iron Man 2 Tony Stark can age a few decades.
