DVD is recognized as a mainstream consumer format at this point, and several of the recent Oscar-winning and -nominated films are already available for purchase in the digital format, with the majority of the others on their way.

The year's second-biggest winner, The Matrix, awarded for its film editing, sound effects, and visual effects, is available for rent or purchase. Two winners for their music—Tarzan, with Phil Collins' Oscar-winning song "You'll Be in My Heart"; and Best Original Score recipient The Red Violin—are also currently in stores.

While top winner American Beauty is not expected in stores until fall and Cider House Rules thereafter, a number of Oscar-winning titles are scheduled to hit stores within the next few months. DVD fans will see Best Actress Hilary Swank in Boys Don't Cry beginning April 18, and Best Supporting Actress Angelina Jolie in Girl, Interrupted should be in stores by June 8. Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow won an Oscar for Art Direction, and can be brought home on May 16. And Topsy-Turvy, which won awards for both make-up and costume design, will be available June 13.

A number of nominated films will be in stores soon as well, including The Talented Mr. Ripley on June 27, Being John Malkovich on May 2, The Insider on April 11, The Green Mile and Magnolia this summer, and the recently released The Sixth Sense.
