Pioneer Elite PRO-111FD Plasma TV Comparisons & Conclusion

Comparisons & Conclusion
At this point in a review, we normally compare the product under consideration with other, similar products. But Pioneer's Kuro plasmas make this difficult because they are so good and so expensive that there are few if any similar products.

I suppose the closest comparison would be to an LED-backlit LCD TV, which can achieve black levels that equal or even surpass those of the Kuro. So far, the only such product reviewed by UAV is the Samsung LN-T5281F, which Tom Norton liked very much. He was able to compare it side by side with the Pioneer PDP-6010FD, and he gave a slight edge to the Pioneer, though it was very close.

The only other reasonable comparison is to last year's model. As I mentioned earlier, the PRO-111FD's black level is only 25% of the 110FD's, which was already the best in the business. Given the critical importance of black level to a TV's overall picture quality, this is no small improvement. On the other hand, the user interface has taken a step backward, and above-white is partially clipped. On the third hand, the price of the 111FD is $1000 less than the 110FD.

Despite the few minor imperfections I found, the Pioneer Elite PRO-111FD upholds the Kuro tradition admirably. Black level, detail, and color are second to none. If you insist on the best at any cost, look no further.
