Projecting All the Details

Three-Five Systems announced the first public demonstration of the company's recently developed Brillian 1920, a high-resolution, reflective, liquid crystal on silicon "microdisplay," which the company has created in addition to its more traditional LCD products. The demonstration took place at the 19th Annual Flat Information Displays Conference in Monterey, California last week.

The company describes a microdisplay as a small display, about the size of a thumbnail, that when combined with an optics system, has the ability to make the apparent size of the image viewed larger than the size of the actual display. Three-Five says that its Brillian family of microdisplays addresses the market's need for high information content displays in small, cost-effective packages.

With over 2.3 million pixels on a small, 0.85" diagonal, the Brillian, according to the company, its highest resolution microdisplay currently available. Describing the new product, Three-Five states, "Designed to meet the requirements of even the most visually demanding applications, this imager has a mere 9.5 micron pixel pitch, for smoother images." The company adds that the Brillian 1920 is well suited for front projection applications, as well as 1600 x 1200 and higher resolution monitor applications and can address both HDTV formats: 1280 x 720 and 1920 x 1080 in progressive scan.

Three-Five says it has developed a complete line of Brillian Microdisplays, ranging from SVGA, the resolution of the Internet, to WUXGA, for products that require high definition or ultra-high resolution.
