HT Labs Measures: SIM2 RTX-45 DLP HD Monitor

The top chart shows the gray scale of the SIM2 HD monitor relative to its color temperature at various levels of intensity, or brightness (20 IRE is dark gray; 100 IRE is bright white). The gray scale as set by the factory, in the medium color-temperature mode and the film gamma mode, doesn't even register as a color temperature on the black body curve. After making adjustments using the Photo Research PR-650, the gray scale measures far more accurately, within 250 Kelvin of D6500, the accurate setting, across the entire range. The bottom chart shows the gray scale (or color temperature) relative to the color points of the DLP color wheel's red, green, and blue filter colors. Green (x=0.322, y=0.619), red (x=0.658, y=0.326), and blue (x=0.146, y=0.101) are reasonably close to those specified by SMPTE, which means that the display will reproduce most of the colors available in the system. The gray scale measures significantly cyan (blue-green) before calibration and is considerably more accurate afterward. The light output was approximately 145 foot-lamberts, which is outrageously bright, yet it doesn't cause any noticeable distortion to the picture. The display has good DC restoration and an accurate color decoder. The chip displays approximately 480 lines per picture height with NTSC sources and is capable of resolving DTV signals out to the display's resolution limits.—MW
