Sports Scores Big on Top 10 Video Streaming List
New research from Parks Associates confirms that Netflix is, indeed, on top and followed by Amazon Video and Hulu in a list that is varied and includes three sports-focused services: MLB.TV, WWE Network, and NFL Game Pass. Parks noted that MLB.TV has peaked following the end of the 2015 World Series and NFL Game Pass is going strong midway through the new NFL season. In contrast, WWE is resisting the seasonality common to other sports services and continues to add subscribers.
The research also shows that more than 25 percent of Internet-delivered “OTT (over-the-top) video services” operating in the U.S. today launched in 2015 and 40 percent within the last two years.
The top 10 ranking below is by subscriber volume and based on reported figures and estimates from multiple consumer surveys, network traffic data, and service provider information, according to Parks.
1. Netflix
2. Amazon Video
3. Hulu
4. MLB.TV
5. WWE Network
6. HBO Now
7. Crunchyroll
8. NFL Game Pass
9. The Blaze
10. SlingTV
“While Netflix holds a substantial lead, new and emerging OTT services are establishing their own place in the market,” said Brett Sappington, director of research. Hulu has escalated its efforts to bulk up the subscription side of its services with the addition of new content and an advertising-free subscription tier, he said, adding that HBO Now claimed the No. 6 spot only a few months after its launch. Sling TV, which launched in early 2015, also earned a place on the list.
Parks research indicates that 59 percent of U.S. broadband households subscribe to a video streaming service with a monthly fee. In the past 30 days, 58 percent have used at least one service and more than 25 percent have used two or more services.
