Super Bowl 50 Breaks Prior Streaming Records

Nearly 4 million unique viewers live-streamed Super Bowl 50 on phones, tablets, connected TV devices, laptops, and desktop PCs, breaking all prior streaming records for the big game, according to CBS Sports.

The network reported that viewers streamed more than 402 million minutes in total and watched more than 101 minutes each on average, for a live-stream average of 1.4 million viewers per minute.

According to Adweek, last year’s Super Bowl averaged 800,000 live-stream viewers per minute, which compares with 528,000 in 2014, 508,000 in 2013, and 346,000 in 2012, the first time the game was streamed live.

Adweek also noted that the 1.4 million-per-minute average for Super Bowl 50 was less than the audience Yahoo drew in October for the first exclusive livestream of an NFL game. The 2015 matchup between the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars, which took place in London and was not broadcast on TV, registered a 2.4 million-per-minute average worldwide, with 1.6 million of those in the U.S.

Although the live stream experienced no major glitches, the feed was consistently about 30 seconds behind the TV telecast, according to Adweek.
