HT Labs Measures: Toshiba 46HX83 HD Monitor

The top chart shows the 46HX83's gray scale relative to its color temperature at various levels of intensity, or brightness (20 IRE is dark gray; 100 IRE is bright white). In the warm color-temperature mode, the factory-set gray scale is too green to measure a color temperature with the darkest images, although slightly less-dark images are close to accurate. As the picture gets brighter, the image drifts blue. After making adjustments using the Photo Research PR-650, the gray scale measures accurately, within 184 kelvin of D6500, the accurate color temperature, across the entire range. This is an improvement compared with the performance before calibration. The bottom chart shows the gray scale (or color temperature) relative to the color points of the display's red, green, and blue CRTs. Green (x=0.302, y=0.607), red (x=0.658, y=0.339), and blue (x=0.144, y=0.069) are almost exactly those specified by SMPTE, which means that the display will accurately reproduce the colors available in the system. The light output was approximately 40 foot-lamberts (although over 200 ft-L is possible). The display has poor DC restoration (unless you turn down the contrast to a reasonable level) and a reasonably accurate color decoder. The 46HX83 displays approximately 480 lines (per picture height) with NTSC sources and, using our Leader LT-446 HD generator, can resolve 720p signals out to 620 (pph) and 1080i sources out to 690 (pph).—GM
