Mitsubishi Shows 149-Inch OLED Display

OLED displays may well be the next wave in flat panels after LED-backlit LCDs. But making them in home theater worthy sizes has been a stretch up till now. Well, Mitsubishi has broken the size barrier by demonstrating a 149-inch OLED display at trade shows in Japan and Amsterdam.

The catch is that it's not a single 149-inch panel. Instead this "modular" OLED unit is pieced together from numerous four-inch panels. Since they don't have bezels, the result is seamless when viewed from a distance, as the photo demonstrates. The picture is said to be much brighter than LCD because OLED is its own light source.

The big OLED (which incidentally stands for organic light emitting diode) is destined for commercial applications. Pricing was unavailable and it's uncertain whether this monster will ever be sold for home use.
