Three new HDTV-capable plasma display panels (PDPs) bearing the Vidikron name were unveiled at CEDIA Expo 2003 in Indianapolis over the weekend of September 5-7. All three PlasmaView PDPs are 16:9 units that can deliver high-definition television programming via outboard tuner/decoder, D-VHS or satellite receiver.

"Baby bear" in the new lineup is the 42"-diagonal VP-42, with native resolution of 852 x 480 pixels. The 50" VP-50 and 60" VP-60 are rated at 1366 x 768. All three are claimed to "provide excellent brightness, contrast and black level performance with outstanding video processing."

Advancements include Vidikron's "Dynamic Pixel Protection" circuitry, which helps to protect the plasma panel from stationary image burn, a persistent industry-wide problem with previous plasma monitors and TV's. The PDPs feature superior 3:2 film detection circuitry said to yield "exceptional detail and artifact-free video enhancement." Vidikron's video processing is claimed to be so good that the new PlasmaView monitors "reproduce even standard NTSC material at near HD quality. "

Standard features on all three models include multiple aspect ratio control with Vidikron's IntelliWide mode, offering the ability to view standard video formats in widescreen without loss of image quality. Discrete IR and RS-232 controls simplify operation and custom installation applications. Mounting options include a tabletop stand or wall mounting kit. Available in October, prices are as follows: PlasmaView VP-42: $5,995; PlasmaView VP-50: $11,995; and PlasmaView VP-60: $19,995.

The new plasma screens join two DLP projectors already in the Vidikron line. "The introduction of the PlasmaView line takes us to the next step in the development of the new Vidikron brand," said Mark Stein, Vidikron's director of corporate communications. "These exceptionally stylish monitors are stand-alone systems with integral video processing, capable of producing superb images, while offering style, simplicity and versatility, providing the ideal Plasma solution for a variety of applications."

Vidikron was acquired last year by Union City, CA-based Runco International.
