First Take: Seth Green & Matthew Senreich Page 2
What's your favorite sketch on the DVD? SETH: I'm really pleased with the Voltron breakdancing sketch [in Episode 5, "Nutcracker Sweet"]. I fought hard for it in the writer's room. Two animators each took a character - one got Voltron, the other Robeast - and worked only on their dance routines for an entire week. Neither one of them watched the results until we put them together at the end of the sketch, where we had the dance-off. MATT: For me, it's "World's Most One-Sided Fistfights Caught on Film" [in Episode 2, "Junk in the Trunk"].
How come? MATT: Umm ... violence is funny?
When you guys started working on the show, did you think about things like, "I'm going to save this bit for the DVD"? SETH: It got to the point where we saved everything. Everything. Early on, we decided to do the secret extra-sneaky stuff.
We had so much stuff to go through when we were figuring out what to "hide," we just said, "F--- it. We're gonna showcase everything." There are so many sketches that we cut either in the animatic phase or after they were filmed, so we included a lot of the deleted animatics so you can see why we decided not to film certain things. [An animatic is made up of pictures of the storyboard synchronized with the soundtrack so the director and/or creators can see what works and what doesn't before moving ahead with final animation.]
Can you give me a hint about the Easter eggs? SETH: There's really only one.
Is it the "Pee Reel"? MATT: That's our lovely Easter egg, yes. SETH: There's no real explanation for it. It started as a contest between two of our animators. They realized they could make characters look like they peed their pants by incrementally adding alcohol to whatever material the puppet was wearing. After they filmed the entire scene or sketch, they'd run off a couple extra frames to "let" the characters pee themselves. About two weeks before we were done filming, it just spread. We had everybody peeing themselves, and I even shot a couple of them myself. MATT: On top of that, the Pee Reel shows you some scenes that aired where you don't even realize the characters were peeing.
